really scary engineering

They actually made hommologation 6R4's that were twin turbo and supercharged
making close to 1000HP and weighing nothing (I am a brit and grew up
watching them rally these things - awesome)
The running gear is extremely highbrid and rare, I once saw a sump go for
over $1000., most of the euro rally people use getrag awd systems - look
into ice racing for som good ideas - those guys make some really sick cars!
I actually am planning on turning my 5KTQS into a little sports car next
year, in the meantime I am tweaking and getting the mechanics all right -
then put it in a jig frame and cut it down to just the floorpan - then
fabricate a lotus 7 style chassis and body to suit (after shortening the
wheelbase somewhat - should be very quick - 4wd turbo 5cyl lotus 7...mmm
with regards to mid engine AWD - I did some research a while ago and devised
a plan to use mitsubishi Eclipse running gear but to turn it round so the
front wheels were at the back, then reverse the output gearing.
Another thing they do in the UK to make mid engined RWD mototr is to use the
tansaxle from a renault hooked up to any motor and then slap it in the back
of something small and light. (this is how the renault gordini things were
done, and also the lotus europa I think - but not sure on that (cant
remember the name now)
