CV Boot 80q

I am not aware of a way to do it without taking the axle off the car. I
believe someone recently seemed to indicate that they had done it that
way.
I'm in the middle of the same job on my 89 200q. I learned the hard way
about using the correct tool to remove the bolts that hold the inner end
of the axle shaft to the trans. The correct tool for mine is a 10mm
12-point star bit. I just bought a set of 4 (6mm. 8mm, 10mm, 12mm) at
Autozone for 12.99. I'm using a 1-1/8 socket on the axle nut. Loosen
that with the tire on the ground. The torque spec is about 150 ft/lb so
be prepared to put some muscle into it. To remove the cv joint from the
axle, I intend to use the axle bolt. I haven't actually done this before
myself, but I watched a friend do it on his S4. He put a small size deep
socket down inside the bolt hole and used the axle bolt to push it
against the end of the axle inside. This popped the cv joint off the
axle end (there's some sort of spring clip in there that secures the cv
joint to the end of the axle).
