A similar car would cost less than half that here in Holland, where used
car prices are traditionally high because of the new-car tax. CarBase puts
a '98 1.8T Ambition at EUR 15.200, about the same in $.

The A3 is an excellent car, very well put together and a lot better than a
Golf, which is built on the same platform. It has less interior space
however and (at least here in Holland) the option packages on the A3 are
very illogical and pretty expensive compared to VW.

It's a high premium to pay for exclusivity in the US, though...
