type44 voilent shaking when high speed braking

car is a '86 5k NA automatic.
 after car is warm, if i brake decelerating from higher speeds (slowing for a
exit off the highway, etc) , car shakes VIOLENTLY when brakes are applied..
wont do it at low speed braking, and its intermittant.   bomb is new.
any ideas?   also hearing a "crunching" noise coming from LF strut tower area
while going over bumps. sounds like someone crumpling paper.

please let me know if you have any ideas..
