92 CQ - strange transmission whine

whine is only really audible above 40mph, varies with road speed, not engine and does not change under load, turning, depressing clutch or coasting in neutral.
There is a slight discordant note to the sound, almost as if there are two sources of noise, running at almost the same speed.
All tyres are same size and similar degrees of tread wear. No evidence of leaking fluid.
Definitely coming from somewhere forward of the gearstick but beyond that, difficult to tell. Doesn't sound like anything I've heard with FWD transmissions.
