bose speaker problems get a little attention

This discussion of the Bose fire starters in 200Q's reminds me of something
that I have been meaning to bring to the attention of the list...I recently
completed a 10k mile road trip in my '96 A6Q, during which the right rear
Bose speaker burned a hole in a bag that was packed tightly against it.
Fortunately the fire did not spread, so the only damage was a four-inch hole
in the bag, and some wear and tear on my nerves.
The speaker seems to be working fine, other than burning holes in things. I
now make a point of packing the trunk in a manner that gave the Bose
speakers some breathing room, and periodic checks have never found the
speakers too hot to touch.
There is, however, one more page to the story: Half an hour after a border
agent reloaded the car post-search, it occured to me to check if he had
packed anything against the speakers. Good idea it was, as there was a
plastic bag in contact with the right hand speaker, and the plastic bag was
melting.
IMHO Audi has been irresponsible in dealing with the Bose problems. I've
been driving Quats for about fifteen years, and as a result, for the first
time I have seriously considered changing marques.
Maybe AOA will yet act responsibly concerning the Bose problems. Meanwhile,
I think I'll fabricate something to keep luggage, groceries, etc. away from
the speakers.
