Yes, this happens to the UrS cars (same C4 chassis as your '92).
No, the weld will not hold.
The fix is to make up a heavier reinforcing plate using the OEM plate for a
pattern and install it. The fix was developed by Ron Einblau and is posted
on www.s-cars.org/urs4s6/faq/faq.html

Got my '92 100S back from the mechanic today. The popping noise in the
steering turned out to be a cracked body mount for the driver side of the
steering rack. They had to weld the piece of sheetmetal back into place. The
car has never been in an accident (at least while I have had it, and my
mechanic did not see any evidence of other damage in the area), so why this
occurred is a mystery to me. My mechanic works on a lot of Audis, and he
said he has never seen this before. Has anyone else had this happen to their
Audi? I just hope the weld holds...
