Clutch Slave Disaster

Well, I've just learned a very expensive lesson.
I decided to try to hammer out the slave cylinder from
the transmission of my '84 5KS. I decided to ignore
my better judgment (and vague recollections of
cautions against doing this in listers' postings) and
started hammering away. I was unsuccessful in
removing the slave, but nothing broke. I then
remembered that I'd used a pry bar to rotate the slave
when I'd done the replacement before. I borrowed a
pry bar, rotated the slave, tapped it out, and it was
only when I'd installed the new slave and was tapping
in the pin to hold it in place that the piece of the
transmission that holds the slave broke off.
I'm appalled at my own stupidity - knowing the
potential consequences I tried to take a shortcut that
is going to end up costing me additional time, and a
fair amount of money. Anyway , I didn't write this to
get sympathy, I'm just hoping anyone who reads this
wont' try to remove their slave with a hammer.
I also have some questions. I'm trying to locate a
replacement tranny, so I need to know what
models/years would fit? Specifically, do any other
Audi models use the same transmission i.e. non-5KS?
How much should I be paying for a used transmission?
The local wrecker is trying to locate one for me right
now and has said it'll probably be between $300 - $400
canadian. I'm going to have a shop do the replacement
since this is way beyond my comfort level, I don't
have a garage to work in and it's getting cold
outside. How many hours should this take, assuming
nothing unforeseen occurs? The used tranny will
likely have a 60 day warranty. Is there anything I
should have done before the tranny is installed? I
just had my clutch done a year and half ago, is it
worth it to have that put into the replacement tranny,
or perhaps put a new clutch in the replacement?
Thanks,
Jeff Mruss
