Ensure that you're motor is properly timed (between the crank and cam), and that your ignition timing is at 15 degrees before TDC.  It may have been timed to the 6 degree spec of the earlier cars, and this would definitely cause some slugishness.  Also, make sure that you're ignition system has been properly tuned up, and that your fuel filter has been changed recently, etc.
