92 CQ - how do I differentiate between front and centre diff noise?

Whine is related to road speed. Have checked transmission oil level - OK. No sign of leaks.
What is worth checking in terms of excess play, etc, without dismantling/disconnecting as it is kind of difficult to determine if the noise is from the front diff or centre.
What repairs can be performed without removing the transmission - I have access to a 2-post or 4-post ramp.
