I've tried with different clamps, D-shaped vise grips, carpenter's
clamp, valve spring clamp and also a socket and the special tool for
resetting the brake piston.

Correct...

I went out and got a pipe earlier today that fits over the collar.
Problem is that when I fit this pipe over the collar (the black thing)
there's no place for the circlip, except under it.

I bought a dedicated circlip plier today, but that didnt help much.
There's simply not enough room in there... I've almost run out of
needle-nose pliers as well, after modifying them.

Checked that, no problem.

Somebody suggested that it was possible to just press everything in
place. I tried that with the pipe mentioned earlier and the caliper
piston tool. A couple of times I bent the cirlip, but one time almost
got it in place. I tried to push it in place with a thin flat-blade
screwdriver but then the little bugger slipped out again.

It's frustrating, and the worst thing is that this is only the first
caliper, I should do the other one as well.....
