The multifunction switch for my 1994 CS quattro (also know as park neutral =
safety switch) went bad. It is located on the outside of the transmission c=
ase.

Symptom was that car would not shift into reverse gear. Initially, I thou=
ght the transmission needed to be rebuilt, but then I noticed that when I s=
hifted into reverse, the dash indicator would read third gear. This part i=
s not available on the aftermarket so you have to pay top dollar to Audi of=
 250.00

Mechanic tells me the part has a hose attached to it, and once it cracks, t=
he weather gets to the internals and corrodes the electrodes. You may want=
to add this to your periodic inspection list, and if possible to simple re=
place the hose to avoid this problem. I never had such problem with any of=
my pre 92 Audis so it must be unique to the 92 and later body style. Salv=
age yard tells me that failure is not epidemic but that are in demand with =
regularity so it will pay to inspect your vehicle.
