5ktq runs better- still too rich though?

Good morning,
The saga of the 5ktq that I'm dragging slowly back into the land of the liv=
ing continues. It had many rough-running issues, most of which I've posted =
about in the past. Last night I finally got the new used downpipe installed=
, and did the horribly dirty air filter while in there. Figured the air lea=
k thru the crack in the pipe was confusing the 02 sensor (also new 2 weeks =
ago) and that the air filter being coal-black was "richening" the mixture.
Well... much quieter now, hits 1.2 bar boost where before only 1.0 and plen=
ty of turbo whine were available. Nice smooth idle, consistently. But the e=
xhaust at idle still smells somewhat like my SU carbed Datsun with the chok=
e on. (Not the most scientific exhaust analysis, I know...)
So what's left? Changing plugs, air filter, o2 sensor, downpipe have made a=
night-and-day difference in the drivability- but if I'm still blowing a so=
oty deposit on the pavement when it starts up, is the last thing left to fi=
ddle the CIS mixture screw?
I need to get this thing tagged so that I can get a feel for it outside of =
the neighborhood streets at midnight. And AZ emissions for an '86 Q are sol=
ely idle testing, so I need to get it at least "tweaked" into compliance. I=
t's frustrating- due to the apparently cracked head on the CGT, it's annoyi=
ng to have a strong running 5ktq gathering dust when another running vehicl=
e is so badly needed right now...
Heck, the Coupe passed emissions easily after sitting for a year with nothi=
ng more done to it than fresh fuel and an oil change!
Regards,
Rob
