That's why you must keep the pumps internals submerged. The liquid
fuel will not burn. Reminds me of a science research project I did a
few years ago. Actually, it was the demo portion. I submerged an
electrode board, using nails as the anode and cathodes in ethyl
alcohol. Talk about stupid! Nothing happene when I turned the Tesla
coil on.

having just done an autopsy on a dead 5kt fuel pump, I would say
there is no
way that you would be able to rebuild it. We had to destroy it to
get in
there.
For those who are curious, yes, it is an electric motor with brushes
and
armature just like any other electric motor. Don't know why our cars
don't
all blow up, especially when low on gas and the tank is full of
fumes....
