I took my gauge cluster out again today and took the whole thing
apart. I have to admit the process was easy. I was just scared of
ruining a rare and expensive cluster or losing parts or something.
Anyway, my problems were the poor ground causing wierd lighting
behavior on the cluster when using the high beams and turn signals
when the dash lights were on. The second problem was the bouncy
speedo needle when cold. I could get it to stop bouncing when I
tapped on the face at about 11 o'clock. Interesting, one of the
broken solder joints is at that position.
Anyway, I soldered the two areas and then figured while it's out, I
might as well hit the rest of the board on that half, so I resoldered
everything from the midpoint over to the temp gauge.
This still didn't resolve my non working cruise. Anyone btdt? I'm
using a known good cruise pump, the linkage servo is holding vacuum.
Oh yeah, thanks to the lister that helped me with the link to his
site for the gauges. I deleted you email and don't know who you are!
Anyway, here's his link:

He told me to remove the screws and bolts and that'll get the whole
thing apart. I did the r&r on my bed, so I wouldn't lose parts and
the stuff that fell out (the tach) wouldn't get damaged. I also
noticed the solder joints don't allow the board to lay flat against
the plastic backing due to the bulging. Meanwhile the pc board is
bolted down, forcing it to flex right across those joints. No
surprise, here. When I put it back together, I lightly tightened the
bolts hand tight. I didn't use a screwdriver. I used deep sockets
without the ratchet. 6&7 mm. I tightened all the screws (they are
phillips screws with hexes) until seating and a *tad* more. The flex
in the board is less extreme and it's done. There is also a tab on
the speedo that holds the board. Don't forget this. I tried prying
against it before I realized it was there. You also need some very
thin and narrow (about 4mm) flatblade screw drivers to remove the two
screws that hold the fuel gauge pot. down. All in all, it was about
an hours work and my dash is perfect. The speedo even reads what the
digital readout says now.
Just gotta fix my cruise.
