Well, I can only tell about the Euro models. In general the 90 was
marketed to be the medium sized 200. Compared to the 80/100 the 90 and
200 was more powerful and more luxurious than their similar bodied
little sisters. So where the 200 was the faster, more luxurious version
of the 100, the 90 was the faster, more luxurious 80.
European 80s were, from 1985 to 1991, strictly 4 cylinder models, while
the 90 had 5 cylinder engines. The 90s had more standard equipment and
nicer upholstery, and on the outside, was denoted by dual headlights and
bumper mounted fog lights and turn signals. In the rear end they had
slightly different tail light panels as well. From the 11992 model year,
both the 90 and 200 was dropped from the lineup, leaving only the 80 and
100 (oh, and the V8).
Btw, did you know that the V8 was intended to be named the Audi 300?
