Alternator is taking a while to kick in

That's not the only possible cause.
1)check belt tension/condition
2)check the brushes(I seem to remember 'sticky' alternators are a
sign of wearing brushes, but I don't know if that is the only cause)
3)Confirm voltage on the exciter wire, and if it is present and
everything else is OK, try replacing the regulator.
