Alternator is taking a while to kick in

I've seen this a couple of times - both on new alternators, strangely
enough, as I recall.

I wonder if it has more to do with the oil pressure warning control
unit, since that is intimately implicated with the D+ (blue) wire, and
does "do" something around 3k rpm.  not that this is what it is supposed
to do, or anything.

Marc, Brendan, did it end up curing itself with time?  It might actually
be a symptom of new brushes not having curved ends yet or something
weird like that.

Where did you get it?  Cost?  Did you shop around?  I've been beginning
to look...
