Alternator is taking a while to kick in

No. If the alternator is "excited" the first time (either by the
blue wire or by reving it high) it will excite itself. No need
for the blue wire anymore. Simple question: Is your battery
idiot ligt illuminating when you swith the iginition on? If the
bulb is burnt, the symptoms are the same as for a lost blue wire.
