4k center diff noise?

Noise from the trans/ propshaft area might be a failed center diff
bearing. When disconnecting front of propshaft, spin the center diff
flange & listen/feel for noise/roughness. If the bearing is shot,
replacement is NOT the 1 1/2 hr job that a lister has posted - you must
disconnect the front of the propshaft, the hex cap on the back of the
rear trans/center diff cover & the bolt into the trans shaft beneath -
there /re 2 types used, the center diff actuator rod & switch, & 7 bolts
holding The rear case onto the main trans case. The rear case then comes
righ off, altho you might have to disconnect the exhaust behind the cat
for clearance. I'm posting this possibility for archiving because in my
case, despite going to 3 different mechanics, including a prominent
Q-list recommended QUATTRO rallyist, all wanted to drop/replace the
whole tranny, a $700-$1000 job in NYC. I posted about this & got help
from ScottyCBoy., then heard from another lister, all off-line, about
the SAME problem - mechanic wanted to remove the whole tranny for $$$$.
For the record, center diff bearing replacement should be ~ 2 1/2 hrs.
