turbo diesel engine swap?

Ok, I have been a bit fed up with the turbo diesel thing recently, but that is
probably the fault of my own mechanical ineptitude.

The VW turbo diesels have been offered three times in the U.S (that I know).
The first was in 82-83 with the A1 Jetta Turbo Diesel. This had underpiston
oil squirters, special pistons, rods, wrist pins, etc. A very robust engine,
but very hard to get parts for. It also had the injection pump with a boost
aneriod which advanced/enriched the mixture under boost. In Europe these motors
put out 90hp with an intercooler. More can be had.

The A2 Jetta Turbo Diesels, aka "EcoDiesel" had a normal injection pump that
didn't enrich the mixture under boost. Boost then leaned the car out and made
it run cleaner. Not so good for max power.

The third is the A3 TDI which speaks for itself as it is computer controlled
direct injection. Problem here: extreme modification requires ECU
modification. In all of the farm implement style IDI engines you can
just "crank up the pump."

Watch your EGT's, and don't run boost over 16lbs. max and you should be ok. If
you are interested in 20+psi, more modification has to be done.
