Distributor rebuild questions

I am trying to track down a rattle in my engine bay. I am thinking it
is due to excessive play, or run-out, on the distributor shaft.

My distributor has about 3mm of play. Does anyone know what the
specification is on acceptable run-out on the shaft?

I was thinking if I could get this thing apart, I could put some
machine washers to tighten things up.I am trying to figure out the
best way to get this thing apart. Any suggestions or BTDT?
