FW: [s-cars] More on audi wheel bolts/studs/torque

About 2 weeks after I bought my 86 5ktq I went on a road trip here in BC
where they use generous amounts of salt in the winter - actually change that
to copious amounts of salt. This was in March (4 years ago) and there was
still some snow and slush on the roads. I hit a patch of slush that had a
huge chunk of metal hidden in it which slashed the sidewall open. This was
all at highway speed.
So I pull over to change the tire. Jack it up, take off all the lug bolts
and *try* to remove the tire. I pulled, kicked, pushed, hit it with a metal
bar and finally I stopped to look for the fancy hidden retainer that the
Audi engineers had installed. Seriously. The wheel was stuck to the hub so
tight that it simply would not come off and I started thinking that I must
have missed some sort of bolt or screw from the inside. I must have made
quite a picture to passing traffic. Car jacked up and me swinging a metal
bar hitting the tire.
I finally got it off, but I had to use so much kicking force that I almost
knocked the car off the jack. I now use a/s on the hubs at every wheel
changeover.
YMMV
