4kq heater valve cable q...

I've got two 4kq's, an 86 and an 87. The temp control doesn't work
correctly in either one, so I took the HVAC dashplates off to see what was
to be seen.

In the '86, the cable has a little plastic football-shaped bead on the
end, and in the '87 it had a dog-leg bend (before I broke it off fooling
with it, whoops!). Both temp control levers had the same metal clip
attached, with a pair of tongues down below.

In the '86, the control cable (wire, really) was pressed into the space
between the tongues and the clip. This works fine for turning _up_ the
temp- the left tongue bears on the football and pulls the control wire out.
When I go back to cool though, there's not enough friction at the clip/wire
interface and the clip slides away from the football. The temp goes down
but not all the way to cool..

The '87 was just disconnected, but I couldn't see how it had _been_
connected.

Q1: How is this really supposed to work?

Q2: If I get the stainless wire red hot could I put some crafty custom
bend into to so that it would work correctly?

TIA,
Robert
