Ugh.  S*cks to be on the road far from home with a dead car.

Check the following:

1.  Pull the codes.  I know, duh, but when you're stressed out you sometimes
forget the obvious.
2.  Crack in dist. cap?
3.  Fuel pump relay overheating (on my old TQW, I chased a no-power
situation that was a fuel pump relay shorting out about 20 minutes into a
drive.  Would run, but no power).
4.  Bad gas - did your friend fill up recently at an 'el cheapo' station
that mixes their gas with water?
5.  Ground straps to engine okay? No wires that are fine at idle but
kink/separate when engine moves?
6.  Hall sensor pickup not falling out of the dist. body?
7.  Ignition components/fuel filter all recent?
8.  Catalyst broken loose and clogging kitty - fine at idle but chokes at
higher exhaust gas volume?

Hope he finds the problem quickly, let us know how it turns out!
