5kt autobox leak (major)

My wheezed 5kt (non-quat) is dripping tranny oil profusely out of the hole
just in front of the tranny bottom pan. It is a whole in the bottom rear of
the diff housing.
I assume this means the tranny must come out to repair, but wonder what could
cause this. Any BTDT?
