So I've started taking apart my starter, figuring it could use at least a
cleaning. The brushes look worn, but other than that it's just got tons of
dirt in there. I got most parts off fine, except for the solenoid. There
are 3 phillips screws in the base that are real tight, and I don't want
them to strip. Any ideas or BTDT's?

If you are talking about the three large-head screws in the starter
housing, these screws are used to hold the field windings that are inside
the starter. Unless you have a shorted, or open, winding unit, you
shouldn't have to remove the windings.
