Drive axle R&R troubles (NAC)

Apologies for this not being Audi-related... but this is by far the best
place I know to go.
My brother and I are trying to remove the right drive shaft from his '95
droF eborP (manual transmission, no ABS) to replace it with a rebuilt
one, in order to replace a bad outer CV joint. And we're stuck.
Following the Haynes manual, we've removed the steering knuckle / hub,
so the last step is to separate the axle from the intermediate shaft.
We've wailed on it with an 18" pry bar and a 3-lb hammer, and it hasn't
moved one bit. The Haynes explains that intermediate shaft has a circlip
that retains the inner CV, but it can't be released; you just have to
pry the splined shaft out of the inner CV. (MAC: I miss triple-square
bolts!)
Any tricks to this?
- Is there a special tool for this kind of thing?
- Any tips on where to pry against? We're prying between the
intermediate shaft bearing mount and the inner CV housing, which would
seem a good place.
- We can't figure a way to get any penetrant onto the splines that are
engaging the two parts, because of how the metal shields are
constructed. Penetrant might get into the intermediate shaft's bearing,
anyway...
Any help would be much appreciated, so that we can finish this up on
Sunday and get it out of my driveway! (MAC: The 5kcstq may get a parking
ticket if I don't.)
Thanks,
Wallace
