The size is 34 mm, otherwise you are right.

It's a male (allen type).

The problem is it must be hollow. The inner rod from the shock
absorber will protrude quite some distance above the nut.

If you can find a 34 mm nut, you could weld a piece of pipe to it,
with an old socket (to get the 1/2 in sqare) on top of that.
