I haven't found the tell-tale round plug in my car, so I guess the wiring's
not there.

Hmm, I'd like to see my car's gas mileage. That's what I'd want the trip
computer for. Do the cars with a trip computer have Autocheck? The
Autocheck in my car has a totally different plug on the IC.

Nope, 2/87 for the intro of the 89 90 in Europe.

Yup, agreed, the mechanical (type 81/85) cluster in an electronic dash
would be at least incredibly hard to install... and it won't physically fit
the dash.

I came to the same conclusions as you did- got the exhaust (cheap anyway)
and left the instrument panel.
