Last night on the highway at 65 mph it acted up again (83 WX with fuse box
under the hood). This was at night so I could discern a few more clues.
The tach very briefly bounced and then dropped to about 900 and held. No
throttle input made any change. It sounded like it had a "Jake brake" on and
was popping out the exhaust. The lights and the radio never flickered. After
a few sporadic incidents it recovered and drove home. Close to home we hit a
stretch of road that had dried clumps of mud all over it that jarred the car
considerably, which made me think if it was a connection problem somewhere
that would surely have activated it, but it ran fine. The outside temp was
about 58F and the engine temp was spot on normal.
When this occurred last time, I checked everything I could find, and only
found the hall sender connection to be ever so slightly suspect so I replaced
it.
My guess is the hall sender, or some sensor giving the ECU the wrong info,
and jacking up the timing? The back of the fuse box is pristine and shows no
signs of corrosion or heat problems, and the grounds are all clean & secure.
TIA
