I think Brett's got a good point about the tuning implications of the new NA
V8 S-cars. I for one know of a major Audi tuner (they do performance and
racing too...) that is seriously sweating this new reality.
Sure, BMW and other tuners have power packages for the NA cars, they are
either measly bolt on filter and chip upgrades (which in NA cars are mostly a
waste of time) or very expensive stroker motors/internal modifications. You
want more power out of an E46 M3 or 540? Its gonna cost you at least $5k for
a few hp. The S4tt could be brought to well over 300hp with chip tuning and
exh. work. Even then, pulling a motor to bolt on some new turbos is a small
job compared to cracking a block and doing internals work.
Bolt on turbo kits are also not a very good option for the new NA motors all
having 10:1 compression and higher will require some kind of compression
reduction. I think it will be very realistic to see a shakedown in the
performance aftermarket, especially with the really big companies. They will
need to adapt quickly.
One positive is that a lot of the "older" cars are coming off warranty and
that means more potential for bigger and more modification, there are
definitley enough 1.8t's (the real money maker in the aftermarket) to keep
things going for a while, and chances are the 2.7tt mods will continue for a
while.
I think Audi's fear of having a smaller displacement turbo motor out power a
larger displacement NA motor is getting quite annoying...yes, a 2.7 V6 with
20lbs boost will out power a NA V8 with 4.2l, is that a surprise to anyone???
The V6tt "only* put out 250hp, but yet still manages about the same
acceleration times as the new 340hp V8 car....hmm, when are people gonna
realize its not peak power that matters but power under the curve?
Anyway, Audi doesn't need to release any of these cars for me, I'll be
happing modding older cars for a long time to come.
