Dennis:
I have a lot of experience with Helicoils and tynserts (a solid non wire
helicoil), I have absolutely NO experience with them in a subframe nut. They
*can* be stronger than what's in there, but helicoil with a grade 10.9 12x1.5
would make me downright nervous, especially since failure could be worse than
catostrophic. Especially 2, cuz you are the ONLY one I've heard about in
10years of audis putting a HC in a subframe mount. Esp 3, since an audi
"endorsed" procedure is well documented.
All that said, adding an extra measure of comfort to your method seems to be
rather simple. I'm all for a better way to repair audis. This one didn't
give me any type of warm fuzzy. Heck I still think of that helicoil I put in
a v8 5peed block head bolt (dealer screwup) almost a year ago.
Chances are you are just fine (pun), but the audi procedure seems to put you
in a very unique position.

I apologize, I should have said oem bolt, that’s what I meant by regular…
..took two days to get from the dealer so I was driving the urq. I’m not sure
I agree about the losing the nut temper, if you drill at high speed w/o fluid
you can really heat stuff up and lose temper, I’ll research it……you
definitely seem to know your stuff, so I will take it under advisement, I
agree 100% about the bolt ! you have to have the perfect shoulder on it
also or it won’t work well, sorry about the confusion there. As with all
repairs of this nature it will get inspection regularly…. If it fails I’ll
let y’all know…….what may be a point well taken here is- if your front end
loosens up a bit don’t just assume you need some new bushings, stop
immediately and check out the whole system or take it someone who knows their
stuff. Do you have a lot of experience with helicoil repairs ? I was under
the impression they are very solid but I don’t have experience with them.
