Problem w/an 89' 100 quattro shift linkage

Hey there everybody,
I own a 89' 100 quattro and I am having a problem with my shift linkage.
When i put the car into gear i have a lot of play in stick.  When its in
gear i can make the shifter look like its its in 3rd gear when its really in
first.  I am also having a problem getting the car to goi into reverse
sometimes.
