Problem w/an 89' 100 quattro shift linkage

My old '89 100Q did that, a couple years after I sold it to
a friend. He said the little tower that the shift lever rides
on had cracked and was wobbling. IIRC, he took the center console
off it and welded the tower back into place, and all was well.
