Leaking front shock

David;

You remove the nut that holds the top of the shock shaft to the top camber
plate bushing, mark the position of the camber plate, and remove the three
nuts holding the camber plate to the strut tower. Remove the camber plate. A
special tool fits over the shock shaft and engages the internal hex in the
cap that holds the shock into the strut. Remove the cap and lift the shock
up out of the strut. The car sits on it's wheels and the spring is not
touched.
If you don't have access to the shock cap tool, you can do this with the car
jacked up and the wheel removed. Release the rubber boot from the bottom
cap, lift it up, and use a pipe wrench through the spring coils to remove
the shock cap. If the car is jacked up, support the bottom of the strut
before you remove the top shock shaft nut to prevent the strut from dropping
and the spring over-extending.
If you re-install the camber plate in the exact same position, you don't
need a wheel alignment.

On the C4 chassis, you can replace the shock without removing the strut
from the car. I have never done this myself, just read it in a shop
manual I got when I had a 92.
