I believe it is dependent upon model, I could be wrong. Go to the
website and enter your serial #- there's an 'upgrade wizard' of sorts
that tells you exactly what hardware you have, how much it'll cost,
and a pretty frank statement on whether it's worth it. As others
have mentioned, ebay's often the better way to go, just be fair and
disclose exactly what model you have and its features.

Yes- it's a common idea, and there are a few expensive little black
boxes that claim to do just that.
However, because:
-the laser gun's beam is focused tightly
-presumably, the detector in the gun is only viewing the small area
where the beam could be reflected, ie, where it's aimed
-you have no idea where the gun is located
-the gun is probably quite far away
-you have little idea where the gun will be aimed(though front
license plates are favorite targets)
...you'd need to wash the whole area in front of your car(at least a
45 degree cone) with IR equal to the strength of the beam returned to
the gun, and you'd need to do so from very close to the area where
the beam was aimed.
I've seen the math-someone did it all out, estimating the returned
beam strength, amount of power needed, the whole 9 yards. It works
out to an enormous amount of IR.
