Digital dash electric eye

I have reason the belive that the eletric eye on my digi-dash is dead. All the lights on the dash work, but it is pretty dim., and when I first start the car, the low light warning light starts flashing to remind me that my headlights should be on. Of course it COULD be some other problem with the dash or wiring. So, does anybody know how to override the eye? Is it as simple as shorting the circuit (IE unplug eye and connect the leads)? Or is it looking for a certain resistance (IE need to add an resistor of a certain value)? Thoughts?
