Jason,
The Audi 5000 has an instrument light control module. It is located above the
glove box. Check your bulbs for your license plate. The module monitors
grounds and if it is not seeing all the grounds, it will not illuminate the
instrument cluster, or the center console, or both. Take a look at the
Bentley wiring diagram and find the module. If you trace all the wires, you
will find that the rear license plate bulbs are part of this circuit. Don't
ask me why!?
Both license plate lamps must be installed and working. If both bulbs are
burned out or if the sockets are corroded the lamp module for the instrument
panel lights will not operate properly and will not be able to turn on the
red lights at night. If this happens when you're traveling at night or cannot
find new bulbs, stop the car; remove the key; turn on the headlights; insert
key and then start the car. Sometimes you'll get the panel lights to work
even if the license plate bulbs are burned out.
Hope this helps you,
JIM
