The column support piece is designed to collapse if too much pressure is put
on the steering wheel/column (such as in an accident when the driver isnt
wearing a seat belt) and will deform under quite light loads - that's why
it's available as a replacement part. My 88 had been in a light frontal a
few months before I bought it (PO admitted so) of which the only obvious
evidence was a new headlight. After I'd been driving it a few weeks I
noticed that the steering wheel appeared to be slightly lower than those on
other Ur-q and I then discovered that a strong pull on the lower part of the
wheel actually repositioned it. Pulled off the trim to find that the support
was deformed and had actually cracked in a couple of places. MIGed the
cracks as a temporary fix which I lived with for a couple of years (didn't
mean it to be that long but you know how things go) and then fitted a new
support when I stripped the body for a respray.
