Stumped!

Okay, I admit it, I'm stumped.
I noticed a while ago that I appeared to have a missing component on my
engine. I chose to ignore it at the time since the engine was running fine
even considering it had a bent exhaust valve. Obviously, I had bigger
issues at the time. Now that the head is repaired and back on and I'm
buttoning everything back up, I'm looking at this empty space and unused
connector and I'm scratching my head. I've been all through the Bentley
with no luck. So here it is and I hope the answer is as simple as I think
it must be.
Right smack in the middle of the top of the bell housing where it joins the
block. About a 1/2" hole and a #8 bolt hole. Obviously some kind of sensor
bolts in here. I know where the RPM/Speed and the timing sensors are
located farther down on the drivers side. So this isn't them but I figure
it's got to be doing something similar. There's a 2 or 3 wire White snap on
connector hanging nearby.
Can anybody please tell me what this is and how it works/what's it's purpose
is? Apparently not having it doesn't stop you from going anywhere but it's
certainly driving me crazy.
Thanks.
