Mike-
Depends on your priorities. IMHO, I'd go for a
2.7T simply because I require a manual transmission
as well as the tuning potential of having 420hp
rather easily as opposed to the 4.2 which is severely
limited in tuning potential without resorting to
add-on supercharging or dropping in a RS6 engine.
FWIW, the 4.2 with sport package drives really nicely-
nice mid-range torque, nice growl of the V8, but lacks
the thrust of a chipped 2.7T or a modded I-5.

Greetings list members:
I have been off the list for a while, but once again, I find myself
going back to the well to retrieve your valued opinions.
I am considering two options either a 2000 A6 4.2 or a 2.7t.
So I would like your input on which car you would prefer and why.
The 2.7t is attractive because of the 6spd manual, sport seats, and
tuning potential to be equal to or slightly faster than the 4.2.
The 4.2 is appealing mostly because of the beautiful fender flairs but
the 4.2 is an awesome motor right out of the box (300hp/295ft/lb). I am
not sure how this car drives compared to a chipped 2.7t (300hp/??ft/lb).
So I could use your input here as well.
As a previous S4Avant owner I have really come to appreciate the tuning
potential and drivability of the 2.7t. Plus having other sporting Audi's
(A4q30vAvant, Urq, and 90q20v) I really come to love things like sport
seats and manual transmission. So the 2.7t is really a great option. But
the 4.2 with it's muscular fender flares make for a truly beautiful car
.
Regards,
Michael Benno
