It can suffer, but mostly if the valve gap is too tight. As the valve
stem expands under heat, a too close valve gap may not let the valve
shut properly. Likewise, if the gap is too big, the valve head can, in
extreme cases, actually snap off.

This sounds reasonable, but I wont say yes or no, as I dont know this
engine too well. But yes, if the chain tensioner doesnt do it's job
properly, the valve timing can be a bit off. How much, I dont know! It
also depends on how close the ignition timing is to where the inlet
valve closes.
