Yes, and variable-valve timing engines(at least those from Audi,
probably others) shift the slack from the top to bottom of the chain
that links the exhaust+intake cams. There are two plastic sliders
the chain ride against, top and bottom...a rod that connects
them...and an actuator that moves the whole thing up+down via some
magic hidden behind a cover(there's an electrical connection, I'd
guess it's a servo kinda deal, using oil pressure, or maybe just a
big electromagnet). If that doesn't make any sense, I have a set of
pictures of it somewhere.
I've had the chance to play with a show-display unit of one head of a
30v V6, and when you push the actuator, shifting the slack the other
cam turns every so slightly. Way cool :-)
The other neat part is something you don't really realize until you
look at the head- the 3rd valve is at a different angle, by
necessity. So, when you look at the cam, the center lobe for each
cylinder has a different timing from the lobes on either side...
