tranny bearing noisy

Yup.  On my 89 200q the rear bearing failed bad.  You
don't need to remove or open the trans case.  You will
need lube and a new seal.  I replaced both the front
and rear bearing on the unit just in case, although
the front one seemed fine.  Not too hard.
