On recent VWs and Audis the key also incorporates the transponder for
the immobilzation system.

The latest Audi A8 has this feature, but I don't think it will be
offered in the US initially. Not only is the thumbprint used for
security unlock, it is also used to individualize the settings of
all the car's systems, such as seat, steering wheel, seatbelt, mirror
positions, favorite radio and climate control settings, etc.
