As I understood it, the S, CD or CS were different trim levels. IIRC in
Europe, you could order, say, a Audi 100 as a base model with base trim and
manual seats, windows, etc., "S" model with uprated trim and some power
stuff, "CD" model (which actually stood for "Corps Diplomatique", or maybe
"Corps Diplomatisch") with lotsa power goodies, "mouse fur" upholstery, etc.
and the ultimate "CS" model with all the power goodies and leather
upholstery. Of course, being in the same vicinity as the manufacturer, you
could order (albeit well in advance) combinations of interior and trim
options, but when Audi shipped the cars to North American dealers, they
chose select trim lines - similar to the select trim that was available with
the 1.8t and 3.0 A4's - in general Canada got the CD's and the US got the
CS's. There were special "commemorative edition" cars - but I don't think
that the "CS" on the trunk had anything to do with that.
Cheers!

1987 Audi 5ktq - woo, a CD....not an 8-track.
1980 Audi 5k - S sure doesn't mean "Sporty"
1962 and '64 Auto Union DKW Junior deLuxes - would that be a "dL"?
