And, as some of you may know, the ONLY audi that ever stranded me
anywhere, was my 2000 A6 which let go it's timing belt at 52K almost
100 miles from home. My old 100Q with 300K is still on the road as
far as I know.

Disconnecting the servotronic is definitely the way to go. The
Audiforum list has a simple 2-minute procedure, which includes
a generous 30 seconds for cracking open a beer. I do not allow
servotronic to live on any of my cars. When it's turned off, the
car will handle just like your 5K.
