I figured it out finally, without even getting my hands dirty.

Gotta go eat, though, so I can't take the tiem to type out the "missing" 
words from those trying to explain to me why I was wrong.

So you have a few hours, maybe 'til tomorrow, to guess where my 
confusion lay and all that needed to be said to straighten me out.  The 
key, of course, is in the snippet quoted above...
