Another "tried and true" method is to feed a length of rope through the #1 spark plug hole (with the piston at or near bottom dead center). then turn the engine towards top dead center. The rope will compress between the piston and head, and prevent futher rotation. After tightening (or loosening) the crank bolt simply turn the engine back toward BDC and pull out the rope. It's an old-timers trick I've used on several vehicles without any problems.
